Alex Bowman is taking his time to decide on his future plans with Hendrick Motorsports. On July 3, Bowman stated that his future will be settled sooner rather than later.
What's at Stake?
Bowman is in a contract year with Hendrick Motorsports and will be one of the biggest factors in determining the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series grid.
He has driven for Hendrick since 2016 and has developed a great relationship with sponsor Ally. However, his health has been a concern, having missed four races earlier this season due to vertigo.
Health Concerns
Bowman missed three races during the 2023 season due to a broken back suffered in a dirt race. In 2022, he was concussed in the Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, which sidelined him for five weeks.
Bowman said, "I feel OK," and wants to make the right decision for himself. He has faith in Rick Hendrick and Jeff Gordon to guide him in the right direction.
Performance Struggles
On the racetrack, things have not gone well for Bowman and his No. 48 team, led by crew chief Blake Harris. Bowman has three top-10 finishes in 14 starts, but seven finishes of 25th or worse.
He took a lighthearted tone when pointing out that the team has had three good weeks but many bad ones. The perplexing part has been that the places where Bowman tends to run well have been a struggle, and vice versa.
Future Plans
Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports executives have consistently expressed support for each other. Bowman wants to make the right decision for himself and the team, and he is not feeling pressured to perform.
He said, "I've avoided the rumors and been trying to go do my job." Bowman's future plans will be settled sooner rather than later, and he is focused on doing what's best for himself and Hendrick Motorsports.
